Perhaps the creepiest, skin-crawlingest book I've ever read. What's more, Wynne-Jones achieves this without even a speck of blood or any violence.
Well written (like his other books), and you'll want to double check all the windows and doors before you go to bed -- if you go to bed!

A master of suspense, Wynne-Jones achieves some of the sinister effect of Lolita's master without the sexual material. Not a traditional whodunit (the narrator is clearly that guy), it's a first-person account of a clever creep. A real page-turner.
