A Rock Can Be . . . (Can Be . . . Books)

I enjoyed this book for a few reasons, as it had beautiful illustrations, a unique writing style and format, and fun language to keep readers engaged. The illustrations that went along with the poem were really well done and did such a good job showing what the words were. They help to bring the story to life on every page and give a good example of what each word is. For example, if one did not know what night -glower was, the picture would show what the author had in mind for an increased level of comprehension of the poem. The writing that went with the illustrations was also enjoyable as there was a set pattern that went with it. This particular poem contained the occasional rhyme as the words on pages next to each other rhymed. So show more when you open to a new page, the two pages before you go together, such as "hopscotch marker and fire sparker" or "lake shimmer and building trimmer". This writing style made the book easy to read and follow along as there was a new set of rhyming words for each page set. Also, the language used in the book was enjoyable to read as it contained fun words like "night-glower", which are not usually words one would hear in every day conversations, but were used frequently in this poem. The language also made the book flow well as the one word per page gave the book rhythm and enhanced the single word on each page. In addition, this book even had an informational section at the back to give a description to some of the fun and different words the author used. The message of the story was that there are many different types of rocks and that their purposes can be fun. A rock can be found almost anywhere on Earth, however, it may not appear as you think it would in some places. This fantastic informational picture book explores the various forms of rocks found all over the world. It truly highlights the excitement found in diversity and how something that appears so simple can actually be extremely complex. A rock can be in the form of a diamond, hot lava, a statue and even the moon! While the content is extremely informational, it aids the development of motivation in reading and writing because it shows how the combination of multiple perspectives can build an extraordinary idea together. I certainly couldn’t have thought of all the forms of rock that were found in the book by myself. The variety show more of rock forms must have taken multiple perspectives and combined them to form a masterpiece concept. A rock can be found . . . in my fish tank, or even as my doorstopper! A Rock Can Be... is one poem told in a picture book. The illustrations have bright vivid colors that will attract the attention of the youngest elementary students. This simple poem explores all the different ways a simple rock can be used. A Rock Can Be... is a great introduction to poetry for the youngest readers. Each page has just a few simple words but it will engage their imagination.

The illustrations in this book are gorgeous and lush, depicting all the different forms that rocks can take, from mountains to dinosaur bones to chalk to sand to gems. At the end of the book, all of the short rhymes about what rocks can be are explained further with interesting rock facts - for example, that some birds will swallow rocks to help them digest their food!

This poetry book develops students' imagination by showing them all the different uses of rocks. Students in 3rd or 4th grade can read this book and see all the wonders that rocks can become. This long poem creates a story accompanied by lovely illustrations, that gets students imaginations going. I really loved reading this fast-paced simple poem book.

The story shows the connections between all of the things a rock can be. It shows the reader that a rock is something as big as the Earth and as small as a grain of sand. It presents the concepts in a way that all readers can grasp yet gives them an opportunity to explore more complicated vocabulary in the appendix. With all of the interest in "mining" games, I could see this as a great addition to a children's library.
