I've read the 2001-edition and that clearly was outdated (don't know whether more recent editions were updated). VanderKam also only looks at the post-exile period.
NO OF PAGES: 234 SUB CAT I: First Century Judaism SUB CAT II: SUB CAT III: DESCRIPTION: A scholar at the forefront of today's flourishing interest in the study of ancient Judaism, James VanderKam clearly explains Second Temple history and religion, including the period's main groups and institutions and the entire range of literature they produced, from the Apocrypha to the Dead Sea Scrolls. The period VanderKam covers is vital to understanding all subsequent Jewish and Christian history, and his introduction to it is complete, accessible, and overall top-notch.NOTES: Purchased at the Dead Sea Scrolls Seminar April 30, 2001 SUBTITLE:

For purposes of this book "early Judaism" is defined as the Second Temple Period, that is, the time from the reconstruction of the Temple under Zerubbabel until the destruction of the Temple in 70 A.D.
