Prescient and chilling, DeMille's #1 New York Times bestselling novel takes us into the heart of a new Cold War with a clock-ticking plot that has Manhattan in its crosshairs.
After a showdown with the notorious Yemeni terrorist known as The Panther, John Corey has left the Anti-Terrorist Task Force and returned home to New York City, taking a job with the Diplomatic Surveillance Group. Although Corey's new assignment with the DSG-surveilling Russian diplomats working at the U.N. Mission-is thought to be "a quiet end," he is more than happy to be out from under the thumb of the FBI and free from the bureaucracy of office life.
But Corey realizes something the U.S. government doesn't: The all-too-real threat of a newly resurgent Russia.
When Vasily Petrov, a colonel in the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service posing as a diplomat with the Russian U.N. Mission, mysteriously disappears from a Russian oligarch's party in Southampton, it's up to Corey to track him down. What are the Russians up to and why? Is there a possible nuclear threat, a so-called radiant angel? Will Corey find Petrov and put a stop to whatever he has planned before it's too late? Or will Corey finally be outrun and outsmarted, with America facing the prospect of a crippling attack unlike anything it's ever seen before?

Oh man, John Corey, how I missed thee! I love the Jack Reacher novels, and also Joe Pike/Elvis Cole, but John Corey blows them all out of the water! Love love love Corey and Nelson DeMille! Interesting twist with Kate, but I don't want to spoil anything, but I will say I liked it. A lot of references to the previous book (I believe The Panther) which I wish was a little fresher in my mind, but I still remembered enough so they weren't totally lost on me. Interesting premise here, and a lot of the book was written from other POVs, which was ok, but I prefer me some Corey and that wit and attitude. Now I just wonder how long I have to wait for my next fix!!!! ( )

Yet another great story from DeMille, this John Corey thriller is filled with hilarious lines that only Corey would speak, along with a plot whose pace quickens with each chapter. A huge fan of any John Corey based book, I find Nelson's humor over the top which adds a nice balance to the mystery. Frankly I'd love to see this or other Corey stories come to the big screen, though I can't imagine which A list actor could do justice since Jack Nicholson is too old, McConahuey doesn't fit and most comics wouldn't be able to pull off the cop element with style. Great read and highly recommended though. ( )

Vasily Petrov, a colonel in the Russian SVR and son of a famous general, is masquerading as a diplomat with the Russian U.N. mission waiting to wreak havoc on the archenemy, U.S. His watcher from the Diplomatic Surveillance Group is ex-NYC detective John Corey, now in semi-retirement after his stint with the Anti-Terrorist Task Force. John is on duty with an FBI trainee, when Petrov and two colleagues head to a party in the Hamptons hosted by a Russian oligarch. The two jump into the catering van, and witness the three Russians escaping mysteriously in a boat. When the identity of the third Russian is discovered, the race is on to save New York City. DeMille cut this one short, including appearances by none of the characters from the first six books in this series. Fast-paced, but below par for this writer. ( )

As I've said with every Nelson DeMille book I've read and reviewed the last several years - pretty elementary writing style, not challenging. But this seems to happen with a lot of "prolific" writers who, on their own volition or, on the advice of an overzealous book agent, dedicate their books to the same particular character or two. Originality is gone and story depth is missing-in-action. DeMille's early works are great books, his latest are churned out with sickening rapidity.

That said, I enjoyed this story but think it could have been much more powerfully told. I long to see new, original characters, the type that drew me to enjoy and appreciate DeMille's work so much more than a decade ago. If you're looking for an easy read, a light book about a serious, yet all-too-believable, scenario, then you will enjoy this book. For me I've had just about enough of the wisecracking, quick-with-a-quip smartass John Corey character. ( )
