In this rollicking tale, a blob of pink bubble gum melting in the middle of the road causes big trouble for five animals that get stuck in the "chewy-gooey icky-sticky" mess. Wheeler's snappy rhyming verse, loaded with silly words and onomatopoeia, begs to be read aloud: "Yuck! Ew! The Shrew's stuck, too! / Gooey shrew, gooey shrew / Pointy-nose-all-gluey shrew / Stomping, shouting 'FOOEY!' shrew / Can't get loose." The clever language is just part of the appeal of this well-designed picture book. Creative variations in size, style, and placement of text add visual excitement, as do the bold colors and patterns of Huliska-Beith's acrylic-and-fabric collage illustrations. Wildly exaggerated expressions and body language enhance the show more slapstick nature of the story and provide plot clues for pre-readers who are paging through on their own. show less

I would recommend this book to young readers for many reasons. First of all, this book is very fun, appealing, and engaging. I liked how this book contained many literary elements such as: rhyming, alliteration, repetition, and
onomatopoeia. An example of rhyme is "yuck" and "stuck." An example of alliteration is "Stomping, shouting fooey shrew." An example of onomatopoeia is "splat!" Another reason I enjoyed reading this book was because of its creative variations in size, style, and placement of text. By doing this, it adds visual excitement. Moreover, I liked the bold colored acrylic-and-fabric collage illustrations which is very appealing to young children. The bid idea of this book is to teach children about rhyming.

This book is adorably poetic. It has a lot of literary elements you would find in It such as: rhyming, alliteration, repetition, etc. The toad is first to encounter the gum while crossing the road, from there the shrew, goose, bee, and crow all become stuck in this humongous pile of gum in the middle of the road. A truck comes careening towards them and it is time for snap decision making, "chew chew chew", they produce a bubble that lifts them from the ground. Having escaped the truck, more trouble arises when a bear pops the bubble, but the gang uses the gum to trap the bear where it stands. Not critical messages, important regardless, are the themes of team-work, and problem-solving.
This funny rhyming story has the same pattern as "The Mitten" among others: each animal who comes along gets stuck in a melty wad of bubble gum. Will they be able to escape when a truck comes down the road? Cartoony illustrations and a tap-your-toes beat make this a great choice for a preschool read aloud.
Bubble Gum Bubble Gum by Lisa Wheeler tells the tale of a toad and some bubble gum. The toad gets stuck in the glob of bubble gum. After he gets stuck, a crow, a bumblebee, a shrew, and a goose gets stuck too! They are all stuck on this glob of bubble gum in the middle of a road when they see a giant truck headed right towards them. They are obviously stuck, and their only way out is to chew! They start munching on the bubble gum when a big bear causes more trouble for them. The bear and a hen gets stuck and the adventure starts all over again. This book rhymed which I loved! The website attached is a bubble gum ball maze!
This book is a great read aloud. It is a cute story line about the life of gum. It is filled with rhymes about different animals getting stuck in gum. I especially enjoyed the illustrations. They are bright and commical.
