I like this book for many reasons. The language in the book is well written and easy to follow. For example, “when it rained, he kept the castle dry.” There are not too many sentences on a page so it keeps the reader engaged. The illustrations are fun and fit the written text. For example, when john gets home with the money for his mother, the texts says “by this time Mrs. Giant was very, very hungry. She was glad to see john and his bag of gold coming through the door.” In the illustration, she is sitting at the table about to eat her shoe and the food cabinet is empty with cobwebs in it. Although there is not a clear message in this book, I think the main message is to always keep a positive attitude, even when things go wrong show more they can always be fixed. show less
I have mixed feelings about this book. I have loved this book ever since I was a child, and was read to from it frequently. The story tells of a sweet giant who goes to look for work when his mother and him are starving. He finds a castle and takes care of it, befriending the royal family. In an accident, he destroys th4e castle but rebuilds it with patience and love. I love the fantasy aspect of the story, with fairies and giants. The story has some words such as "rubbers" (boots) that are a little different, and I consider this a positive. The story is in third person, as most picture books are. There is a sad event, where the giant accidentally destroys a castle, but not real conflict or drama. The mood is not positive overall but show more fairly somber. The negative aspects of this book are that it is not particularly exciting and does not have much moral lesson. The star of this story, the adorable giant John, is so lovable that I can not help disliking this book. show less
This was not one of my favorite books I have read for this project. I did like how helpful giant John was and that he held such a positive attitude throughout the story! He was ready to step up and go out into the world to get a job to help feed himself and his mother. He goes off into the world and begins to help a king and queen however, the fairies miss him far too much and come to find him to make him dance. But he is so big that he destroys the castle and hurts the king and queens family. He finally gets the courage to the tell the fairies that they are being mean by making him dance all the time and he fixes everything he wrecked. Overall the main idea of this story is to stick up for yourself about what is right and wrong. Also show more to keep a positive attitude in day to day life. After the castle was wrecked 'the king and queen and princess and dog were all crying, but Giant John did not cry'. I can relate a good deal to Giant John because I try hard to look at everything with a positive attitude no matter what is going on. Even if I am having the worst day I try and turn it around. I feel that Giant John is very much the same. show less
Although there was no clear message, in my opinion this is a good book for children. I liked this book because the language and writing were clear and easy to follow. Also, the illustrations throughout the book were detailed and creative. For example, the illustrations showed how large Giant John was compared to the castle. The book could have been even better if there were an obvious moral for children to learn.
Giant John was a mythical story about a Giant named John who loved listening to music and loved dancing. In the story you learn more about him and how he always loves to take care of the people he cares for. He will go to the end of the earth and back to make sure everyone he loves is taken care of and happy. This book allows children to get lost in a world that is magical and exciting. This book would be great for teachers to teach with and to learn about problem and solution and work on character charts! This is a book a classic book that can never get old because of the imagination of the material! Every child could get lost in the mythical world of Giant John!
Giant John is a great book to read for fun to a 2nd or 3rd grade class. It is about a giant and his mother who are poor and have no more food, so off to work John goes. He lives at a castle and protects the king, queen and princess from rain, heat and other things. He lives with them for a while until he earns enough money to go back home to help his mother. Overall a nice entertaining and slightly funny book to enjoy.
This book was great with a fun message. There wasn't very intense detail or a serious storyline but its a fun read with an imaginative story. It does portray a good work ethic and providing for family.
