Sofie and her father live on the New Hampshire coast. Her mother, a Cambodian refugee, left years ago. He runs a fishing boat, and with diminshing catch an increasing regulations, they are barely making it. Sofie meets a returned vet suffering from PTSD and, despite her father's forbidding it, develops a relationship with him. Then her father leaves for North Carolina to fish there for the winter, and Sofie's mother and grandmother move in, suffering horrors from their own memories.
