"The Crazy Psychologist" is a quick but enjoyable read set in Scotland, which was one reason for me wanting to read it. The other reason was the obvious connection to psychology. However, based on the title and the book description, I was expecting a kind of thriller/mystery type of story. But there was no angst, no real mystery, no "crazy". It all centers around a middle-aged woman who endured abuse while growing up in state care after her mother was murdered by her father, but goes on to become a successful if somewhat unorthodox clinical psychologist working with teenagers on a remote island. Quite a good basis for an exciting story I thought. It turned out to be a gentle tale about coming to terms with your past, overcoming show more obstacles, about redemption and the meaning of family with some amusing parts thrown in. It is nicely written; in fact, quite poetic in parts, but I would have liked more depth and character development. I received a complimentary copy of the book via NetGalley in exchange for an unbiased review. show less
