The new Teubner edition is based (1) on a thorough revision of all the original papyrus manuscripts so far published, and (2) on the results of the editor's commentary, the second and concluding part of which was published by Brill's in Leiden in 1997 (Die Lieder des Bakchylides, Erster Teil: Die Siegeslieder, 1982 (reprinted 1997); Zweiter Teil: Die Dithyramben und Fragmente, 1997). The fragments preserved as quotations in later prose authors have also been revised, as have been the two papyri which preserve parts of ancient commentaries on the poet's Victory Odes and Dithyrambs. The Preface has also been revised and partly re-written. This new edition contains the most up-to-date account of what we now know about the texts of this great but sadly underrated contemporary of Pindar and Aeschylus.… (more)
