Description

According to Time magazine, Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf holds "the world's most dangerous job." He has twice come within inches of assassination. His forces have caught more than 670 members of al Qaeda in the mountains and cities, yet many others remain at large and active, including Osama bin Laden and Ayman Al Zawahiri. Long locked in a deadly embrace with its nuclear neighbor India, Pakistan has come close to full-scale war on two occasions since it first exploded a nuclear show more bomb in 1998. As President Musharraf struggles for the security and political future of his nation, the stakes could not be higher for the world at large. It is unprecedented for a sitting head of state to write a memoir as revelatory, detailed, and gripping as In the Line of Fire. Here, for the first time, readers can get a firsthand view of the war on terror in its central theater. President Musharraf details the manhunts for Osama and Zawahiri and their top lieutenants, complete with harrowing cat-and-mouse games, informants, interceptions, and bloody firefights. He tells the stories of the near-miss assassination attempts, not only against himself but against Shaukut Aziz (later elected prime minister) and one of his top army officers (later the vice chief of army staff), and of the abduction and beheading of Daniel Pearl -- as well as the forensic and shoe-leather investigations that uncovered the perpetrators. He details the army's mountain operations that have swept several valleys clean, and he talks about the areas of North Waziristan where al Qaeda is still operating. show less

In The Line Of Fire is Pervez Musharraf's autobiographical reminisce of his time doing the world's most dangerous duty-being the tenth President of Pakistan. On the side, Musharraf was also a serving four-star military General of the Pakistani Army as well as its Director-General of Operations when capitulated to political fame as the USA's most resolute Islamic ally during the War On Terror.

His autobiography reads as much a self-exoneration as an exercise in finger-pointing. He denies his primacy in the Kargill conflict; whitewashes the allegations of corruption and desertion levelled against him while superficially calling for the democratization of Islam though he provides no framework for this or even a coherent definition of what show more democratization entails in the Muslim sense.

Lucid and thought provoking, I walked away with a sense of befuddlement after reading Musharraf's words. Not because he is a tiresome writer. But because he is notorious for the multiple skeletons in his closet.

A good read mainly but must take it with a pinch of salt and take in mind the author's agenda. After all, Musharraf was still in power when he wrote this.
From this book, one gets not just Mushrrar's background, but an insight into his personality. Since it is an autobiography, you get his views on issues, whether right or wrong. Some events and issues may be covered more lightly than a reader would like. Still, a book like this does give an insight into the author's beliefs.
From General to President of the Islamic Republic of pakistan & the first Islamic Country with 'The bomb'; A task that this soldier was not trained for but made it his personal challenge to succeed in. The General give his perspective on the relationship with America post 9/11 as well as the Pakistani Atomic program, Missile Programs & the difficulties of development in the country. This book is not intended for anyone looking for controversial issues but provides a good oversight of the man who came to power by way of coup.
PERSONAL NARRATIVE AND A DEFENSE OF HIS LEADERSHIP, REFLECTING ON THE CHALLENGES OF GOVERNING PAKISTAN IN A VOLATILE GLOBAL CLIMATE.
