Description
Liberalism and democracy have long been assumed to exist in a complementary relationship, if not always an entirely easy one. This book scrupulously investigates the reason for this alliance and the sources of its tensions, providing a lucid and succinct introduction to some of the subject's central concepts and concerns.Tags

Liberalism and Democracy are a collection of essays on the subject of the relationship between Classical Liberalism as a school of thought, and Democracy as a form of government. As the reader progresses through the book, the essays build upon the subject matter of the previous, to probe further into our western notions of government. Of particular interest are the essays "Rights of Man" and "Democracy and Socialism," which use critical analysis to flip our notions of Liberal Democracy on their heads.
I enjoyed this book thoroughly; in its small size, it touches on most themes in political philosophy (save feminism), and serves a an interesting discourse in addition to most discussions of modern political theory. I highly recommend it.

Explores relationship and tension between democracy and liberalism, where liberalism is understood (roughly) as individual freedoms, and democracy is understood as either a formal/juridical process of determining government or a call for social equality.
A good book, very short, but scattered. It's not even that it could have benefited from an editor -- it's beyond that. The presentation is not at all programmatic, and you don't feel much sense of continuity between chapters, nor much sense of why the chapters are divided the way they are.
