Laura Lam's adult sci-fi debut False Hearts: Two formerly conjoined sisters are ensnared in a murderous plot involving psychoactive drugs, shared dreaming, organized crime, and a sinister cult.

Raised in the closed cult of Mana's Hearth and denied access to modern technology, conjoined sisters Taema and Tila dream of a life beyond the walls of the compound. When the heart they share begins to fail, the twins escape to San Francisco, where they are surgically separated and given new artificial hearts. From then on they pursue lives beyond anything they could have previously imagined.

Ten years later, Tila returns one night to the twins' home in the city, terrified and covered in blood, just before the police arrive and arrest her for murderâ??the first homicide by a civilian in decades. Tila is suspected of involvement with the Ratel, a powerful crime syndicate that deals in the flow of Zeal, a drug that allows violent minds to enact their darkest desires in a terrifying dreamscape. Taema is given a proposition: go undercover as her sister and perhaps save her twin's life. But during her investigation Taema discovers disturbing links between the twins' past and their present. Once unable to keep anything from each other, the sisters now discover the true cost of secrets.… (more)

Rather disappointing - neither the SF nor the crime elements work well for me. An OK popcorn read, but doesn't make me want to rush out and buy the next one. ( )

I went into this book with no expectations so I was very pleasantly surprised. The beginning of the book starts off in a fairly standard science fiction way: futuristic San Francisco where everyone has biotic implants to make life and learning easier, virtual reality dreaming is all the craze and there is virtually no crime. There's aspects of The Matrix, Blade Runner, Minority Report, all those sorts of sci-fi classics.

Our main characters are formerly conjoined twins Tila and Taema. They're brown, bisexual and spent the first 16 years of their life in a cult called Mana's Hearth. I'm so entirely bored of straight, white protagonists so it's great to read a book where bisexuality is smoothly integrated.

I found it a fast-paced read and I did not want to put it down in the last half. Tila and Taema's alternating perspectives worked really well, we learned about both their present and past. ( )

This took a long time to get started. The conjoined twins part never seemed integral to the narrative. For me the sci-fi elements seemed largely irrelevant to the characters and the story. ( )

This is a fun. exciting read. The plot is interesting, with lots of twists and turns, and I really liked the two sisters and the relationship between them. I had a few minor quibbles, I thought some of the exposition was very clunky, especially at the beginning, and the main romance felt cliched and was not very engaging. But overall, I really enjoyed reading this book, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good sci-fi thriller. ( )

This book was REAL good. It was intense, kept me reading, and suspenseful. I loved the world that was created and how everything ended up coming together.

In False Hearts, Tila and Taema, are twins, conjoined until they are 16, and separated when they escape a cult they've belonged to since birth. The are trying to live normal lives in San Francisco, when Tila is accused of murder. The plot that ensues is heart racing, complex, and full of mysteries to be solved.

I loved how the story was told, alternating perspectives between Tila and Taema - present, and past, revealing things about Mana's Hearth, and what Taema is going through to save Tila. I really enjoyed each girls voice - distinctive, yet similar because they are twins. The story was well paced, the writing was easy to read, and I loved the descriptions of future San Francisco and the Hearth.

The mystery element was also really well done - I don't read a lot of mystery though, so it's not much coming from me. I loved how things unfolded and how Taema worked things out bit by bit. The culmination of all the little threads was so well done as well. Loved it.

Overall, I really enjoyed the story, the characters, and the world created by Laura Lam. I can't wait to get to the next book in this world. ( )
