I've heard amazing things about this book, but it didn't work at all for us. It just didn't work with my son's learning style. He hated it. We had already started with Hooked on Phonics when my cousin's wife told me how wonderful TYCtR was. So we tried it. And went right back to HoP, which we used through all 4 (3? I can't remember) levels. So if this book doesn't work for your child for some reason, don't despair. There are other options out there.
I taught my daughter to read, beginning when she was 4 and ending when she was a little over 5. Now she's 6 and in Kindergarten and can read just about anything she wants to. The complete original Winnie the Pooh stories, nutrition information on milk cartons, you name it.
This book actually does what it says it will do. Amazing!
Update: My daughter is 7 now and has read the entire Harry Potter series, the Hobbit, the Lord of the Rings, and a whole lot of other things. And she can then sit and tell you the story from beginning to end. I give her a lot of the credit, of course, but this book set her on her way.

This worked really well for me with my children! My daughter, now 19, still remembers it vividly as "the yellow book" and she loved it. I highly recommend using it with a pre-kindergartener.
I love this book. I have taught 3 children to read using this book in varying degrees for each child.
