Description

"This text [v. 4] is printed in two book sections: First book comprises Parts I and II and frontmatter. Second book has Parts III and IV plus bibliography and indices. This highly anticipated two-book fourth volume in N. T. Wrights magisterial series, Christian Origins and the Question of God, is destined to become the standard reference point on the subject for all serious students of the Bible and theology. The mature summation of a lifetimes study, this landmark book pays a rich tribute show more to the breadth and depth of the apostles vision, and offers an unparalleled wealth of detailed insights into his life, times, and enduring impact. Wright carefully explores the whole context of Paul's thought and activity--Jewish, Greek and Roman, cultural, philosophical, religious, and imperial--and shows how the apostles worldview and theology enabled him to engage with the many-sided complexities of first-century life that his churches were facing. Wright also provides close and illuminating readings of the letters and other primary sources, along with critical insights into the major twists and turns of exegetical and theological debate in the vast secondary literature. The result is a rounded and profoundly compelling account of the man who became the worlds first, and greatest, Christian theologian" -- Publisher description. show less

It's taken me a little under 8 months, but I've finally finished. I will probably have to read it again to understand it more fully. It is long (1519 pages) and thought-provoking read. I also find this work to be a relatively easy read considering the subject. I heartily endorse this book for reading (It is worth considering reading the previous books in this series in order to lay a good foundation however). I would also refer you to some of the reviews currently available. See:

It also seems apparent that this work will be a central show more text for understanding Pauline Theology over the next 50 years. show less

"I think that it is Wright's most compelling academic book. Not only does it give the clearest exposition yet of Wright's take on Paul, but it is also his most generous exposition - not just in word-count, but in the way in which Paul is seen as a rich and expansive thinker."

"At once fascinating and frustrating. In highlighting Paul as a covenantal, narratival, eschatological, and coherent thinker, the core of whose theology is Christ, crucified and raised from the dead, Wright has captured the outlines of the apostle Paul’s teaching. In its formulations on justification, and in the way in which it speaks of sin and salvation, PFG raises serious, material show more concerns that it does not satisfactorily resolve." show less

"What he has accomplished in this multi-volume series is truly amazing. One of Wright's great strengths is that he attends to the big picture. Since Wright takes the risk of explaining the universe of the NT worldview and theology, he opens himself up for criticism. Virtually no one is going to agree with every feature on his map. Still, we can be grateful that Wright has given us a map."
