The Girl From MaltaBy Fergus Hume The ocean steamer NEPTUNE was on her way from Brindisi to Malta, the Mediterranean near the shores of Italy. The 300 passengers were in high spirits, having had a delightful voyage from Australia, and looking forward to their arrival in Valletta, Malta's capital. Miss Kate Lester, the belle of the ship, was the pianist playing the "Venetia Valse," to which a number of young people were dancing. Meanwhile Ronald Monteith leaned lazily against the bulwarks and surveyed the festive scene with a smile on his handsome face. He was not clever, but he could ride, shoot, swim and box to perfection, and he was an honourablue gentleman, with a kind heart and a generous spirit. It was at that point he ran into Ventin, a gloomy man despite his adventurous past shooting big game in the Rocky Mountains and hunting elephants in Africa. Ventin's problem was that he'd received a letter - a death threat. Was it really a surprise then, when murder soon followed? No library descriptions found. |
