chrisharpe Which of these guides to get? Both are on my shelves. Kaufman is handy and highly portable, but Reid is packed with information. You need them both...

This is an excellent book!
Includes photos, species plates, physical descriptions, and descriptions of habits.
One of my favorite features is the colored distribution maps, which even include historical ranges for some species. In addition to this, the text also tells the species distribution outside North America.
This book has been very useful for research or just to identify the mammals in my area, and I have seriously sat around for hours reading it just for fun!
