Description

"Fran and Frederick Hamerstrom were born in New England in the early 1900s. After marrying, they moved to Wisconsin in 1935 to become students of Aldo Leopold, who assigned them a research project studying the prairie chickens of Wisconsin in order to save them from extinction. The Hamerstroms spent more than 30 years sharing the message of wildlife conservation across the state. Fran was a flamboyant and prolific writer of journal articles and popular books. Frederick was an intellectual show more with a rigorous scientific mind. They were known throughout central Wisconsin for the way they lived: in an old, unheated farmhouse, with no indoor plumbing. They mentored hundreds of future scientists and welcomed thousands of people to their home to help with the yearly prairie chicken booming season count. They left a lasting legacy on our state that should not be forgotten. The book emphasizes their contribution to wildlife conservation"--Provided by publisher. show less

The history of the conservation and ecology movement is presented along with the biographies of these two pioneers and includes Aldo Leopold's influence on the couple. Good information to present to young adults about ecosystems and the lifestyles of the biologist in 1940's to 1960 and onward. Amazing dedication to science is demonstrated in record keeping and persistence by Fran and Hammy.

I enjoyed reading this book.

Great children's non-fiction piece about an environmentally minded couple. The book has helpful resources for further information and would fit in well as an option for an endangered/saved species unit.

I got this book as an early reviewer and I thought it was great! I would recommend this book for younger readers, 6th-8th grade maybe, interested in wildlife conservation and some of americas most influential biologists of the 60's, it was a quick reed and I honestly learned a lot.

Fran and Frederick Hamerstom dedicated their lives to wildlife research and conservation. Susan Tupper's biography describes the unique lives they led and the enormous work that they did on behalf of Prairie Chickens and other wildlife in the Midwest.
Highlighted words in the text are defined on the same page and a glossary follow in the appendix. This book is written chronologically and a timeline provides a summary of Fran and Frederick's lives. Book discussion questions and activities are helpful for classroom use. A listing of websites of interest and index complete the text.
While of particular interest to Wisconsin residents, this story of research and conservation will be enjoyed by a larger audience. Children and caregivers who show more enjoy this book will also enjoy "Walk When the Moon is Full" by Fran Hamerstrom. Advanced readers and adults will enjoy Fran's books such as "Strictly for the Chickens." show less
