Ty, a teenager who inherited his father's drug dealing business after his dad's incarceration, doesn't care about anything else but building his empire. He stays at school only because by age fourteen he "knew school wasn't be nothing but a place of business" and because he calls less attention to himself that way. Ty keeps his business a secret from his mother and swears he won't get a real girlfriend until he's 21 because it's just another distraction.

When he's sent to alternative school, he meets Alyse, whom he can't help falling for. Then his cover is blown, and suddenly, the life he thought he had control over is out of his hands.

I LOVED this book. I think it's an engaging and easy enough read for reluctant readers, but it is show more still a complex, thought-provoking read. The moral challenges posed by this book are fantastic. show less

While his dad is in prison, Ty is holding the family business together--the family drug business. His self-discipline, brains, and business acumen are amazing for a 17-year-old, even though they are invested in a drug-hustling deadend. The author has created a surprisingly hopeful book, one that respectfully acknowledges the intelligence and street smarts necessary for success, whether the challenge is drug dealing or college preparation.

Ty is a 17-year-old who has taken over his father's drug dealing business after his father's incarceration. Ty thinks he's got mad skills, but one slip up has things quickly spiraling out of control. Ty soons finds himself standing at a crossroads that will effect him for the rest of his life.
Engaging, realistic, and an enjoyable read, young adults will not be able to get enough of this fast-paced story. Due to content, I would recommend this story for older teens.
Ty is a dealer who has taken over for his dad (who is in jail), but a series of events makes him rethink his life. The chapters were short and the plot interesting. Not my usual type of book to read, but I really enjoyed it.

Ty Johnson knows how to survive in the real world, to take care of problems on the spot. He has everything in control and knows the way to run things. He's intelligent, patient, and skillful, everything he needs when he inherited his father's business. Everything is running smoothly for Ty and that's the way he wants it.

But then a series of struggles and obstacles ruins the way Ty does things. Not only does he have to take care of a competitor who wants to run him out of business, but he has to deal with school, the only thing his mother wants him to focus on. That could be especially difficult when a girl like none other, Alyse, enters his life and makes him feel show more happy for once. The hardest part is trying to hide from his mother, and almost everyone new he meets, that he is involved in dealing drugs, the business that Ty's mother hoped to forget after Ty's father went to prison for it.

Ty starts to question every action he does, from the moment he entered the business. With so many problems to handle, can Ty get through it all?

Allison van Diepen takes on a risky plot that so many teens have heard about, but never knew much about, and pulls the reader in. STREET PHARM is a true coming-of-age story that causes the reader to be at the edge of their seat, quickly turning pages, and in the end wanting more. A quick, fast-paced read that is necessary for all teens to read.

BLURB: If a brother wanna get ahead, he gotta use every minute to better himself. Everything I did made me better -- tougher, stronger, richer, smarter -- or I didn't do it.

REVIEW: I picked this book up at my library, because it look interesting, and I really wanted to read it! Now i'm finished! Tyrone Johnson was only a teen that has gone through alot with his business that his dad has built up before he went to jail. Tyrone Johnson is a full time drug dealer, and hustler. He decides to go back to school, and his business on the side. This book was really a pageturner, and I was hooked till it ended! I really enjoyed this book because it had alot of suspense, and mystery to go along with it. This book is based in Brooklyn, New York, and was about the life, and lives of one person. The rest of this book truly unfolds in this wonderful book by Allison Diepen! I would suggest this for anyone that likes mystery, suspense, and young adult books! You can also learn about the different lifestyles of people around you. My favorite character in this book was Ty (Tyrone) because he has been through alot as in helping his friends, keeping up his business, and keeping everyone that is close to him safe! I got to step in his shoes, and see the life from a different persons perspective. This book was definitely a goodread, and you should pick it up soon!

Street Pharm by Allison Van Diepen takes place in Brooklyn, New York. In this book, the main character is introduced immediately. Tyrone Johnson, age 17, was born and brought up in a hustling family. Because of a parent, his whole future was “decided” for him.
Tyrone’s father, Orlando Johnson is in prison throughout the entire story for drug dealing. Tyron has been dealing since the age of 16 and looks for advice from his legendary father. Tyrone encounters many issues that he feels are too difficult through out the book but something changes him.
In the book I was introduced to a new character, as was Tyrone. Tyrone had always struggled with education so he transfers into a strict school where he meets Alyse. Alyse and all the show more other students have tough backgrounds but still want an education. Alyse and Tyrone end up becoming partners for a project which leads to them becoming good friends.
Tyrone’s feelings for Alyse are different though. He likes her. But he promised himself and his father that he would never let a girl interfere with his hustling life. So now he has to decide.
I would definitely recommend this book because it relates to many teenagers lives and would really be an eye opener to many students. You’re going to enjoy this book.
