Questa raccolta di racconti ha avuto genesi in un periodo tra il 2005 e il 2012, per la prima volta pubblicati insieme in Italia. nella presentazione Coe ci spiega il loro legame con altre sue opere. Il titolo originale gioca sul doppio significato dell’espressione “loggerheads":“ai ferri corti” e “disaccordo”, concetto caro allo scrittore appassionato di musica oltre che di cinema. In ogni vicenda narrata troviamo la riflessione sulle infinite variazioni che la propria storia personale potrebbe avere, come un accordo musicale dalle infinite possibilità. Avremmo potuto dire ... fare .. tacere o parlare ... Da qui scaturisce il rimpianto.
