This was my first book ever read in Dutch. It was a little strange because it was actually set in the USA, which I did not realise when I bought it. I was expecting more immersion in Dutch culture from my first Dutch read, but I suppose there is no reason why Dutch authors must only write about Dutch speaking places.
Boy 7 (an older teen) finds himself alone on a remote world with no memory of who he is, or what he is doing there. He has a backpack, a phone with a voicemail message from himself telling him not to call the police, a roll of banknotes, a picture of a grey building, a Pizza Hut leaflet and a scrawled telephone number that turns out, when he calls it, to be a public payphone.
That is an interesting way to start a book, and he show more is quickly befriended by a girl, Lara. Lara is about his age - old enough to drive though. She takes him to her aunt's guest house, and slowly Boy 7 begins to trust her enough to enlist her help in unravelling the mystery.
This was actually a very interesting read. The story moves along quickly enough, which was good as it made up for my slow reading speed with it. There are some nice twists and turns and a story about corruption and power, and events much larger than just one boy lost in the American desert.
Some things seemed a touch odd - principally the way that Lara just accepted that Boy 7 would be called Boy 7 (the only name he can think for himself based on the number on his clothes) - but perhaps that is explained by later events.
This is a good young adult story. show less

A boy wakes up on the side of the road. He doesn't know where he is, doesn't even know who he is. All he has is a backpack filled with seemingly not useful things and a mobile phone. There's one message on that phone: "Whatever you do, don't call the police." It may seem strange advice, but the most terrifying part is, it's his own voice.
The story is not unlike that of the movie Paycheck, where the main character tries to puzzle his memory back together using items he has sent himself. I found it interesting anyway. My youngest sister had asked me to read it first, to see if there was some scary stuff in it. There isn't really. It's promoted as YA, but I would show more market it to a bit younger teens. The writing is a bit too childish for YA and the problems in the story are also solve a little bit too easily for my liking.
One thing I thought a bit odd was that the setting was in the USA. (Nothing weird, I hear you think) But for a Dutch author it doesn't really makes sense. It didn't feel very American, were it not for the many references to PizzaHut, Wallmart and Wendy's. Especially with the latter two, the author went on to explain what they were (for we don't have them in The Netherlands), and it felt very weird to me.
But still, it was an enjoyable story, and I thank my sister for making me read it. It reads very fast, so if you've got a few spare hours... show less
