Description
This book is a lavishly illustrated manual for ready identification of 299 common and economically important weeds in the region south to Virginia, north to Maine and southern Canada, and west to Wisconsin. Based on vegetative rather than floral characteristics, this guide gives anyone who works with plants the ability to identify weeds before they flower. A dichotomous key to all the species described in the book is designed to narrow the choices to a few possible species. Identification show more can then be confirmed by reading the descriptions of the species and comparing a specimen with the drawings and photographs. A fold-out grass identification table provides diagnostic information for weedy grasses in an easy-to-use tabular key. Specimens with unusual vegetative characteristics, such as thorns, square stems, whorled leaves, or milky sap, can be rapidly identified using the shortcut identification table. This book will facilitate appropriate weed management strategy in any horticultural or agronomic cropping system and will also serve home gardeners and landscape managers, as well as pest management specialists and allergists. show lessTags

299 species of weeds of "commercial importance" ie found in fields and gardens. (Why did they stop just one weed short of the round 300?) Very in-depth guide to identification and habits of the plants. Emphasis on identifying plants from foliage (pre-flowering) is very helpful to gardeners and farmers (get it before it sets seed) and also to foragers (get it while it's young and tender). Excellent guide to identification of grasses, which is something I really need to know and haven't found elsewhere.
If I was stranded on a desert island with only one book, this would be it! This is the book I return to over and over as I work in the garden, discovering one ambitious little green sprout after another. It has much to offer the beginning gardener and the advanced horticulturist. The book has a vegatative key at the front, but I never use it because it's so much fun to look at the pictures. Along the way I find myself reading about all sorts of things other than what I started out looking for. If you live in the Northeastern quarter of the U.S. and you go outside even occasionally, you need this book!
Great reference for identifying weeds. I started putting a sticky note on the pages that had weeds from our farm...then had so many stickies that I just read it. I own this. would have liked it to include more on irradication of the weeds.
Slightly large for a pocket book but... extremely useful
Great book on identifying weeds. Intend to purchase a copy soon.
