A short story prequel to Grisham's excellent Rogue Lawyer, Partners tells the tale of how lawyer Sebastian Rudd came to employ the services of his bodyguard known simply as Partner. A man is in the wrong place at the wrong time, starts getting shot at and in defense inadvertently kills a cop. Rudd is his defense attorney. The trial itself is a little light by Grisham standards, however, this story seems rushed to its conclusion. Still, I like the characters and hope to meet them again.
As others have stated, this is a novella and prequel to Rogue Lawyer. A compact story that sings to you. Sebastian Rudd, works to piece the story together, fighting a city prosecutor who has the officer's partner fabricating a story of his own. The characters are easy to understand, but not complex. Easy read.
The "King" of legal thrillers, James Grisham delivers PARTNERS, a novella prequel to Rogue Lawyer, Sebastian Rudd---the background history of his dedicated driver, bodyguard, law clerk, and partner.

If you read Rogue Lawyer, (recommend) we met the street lawyer, who is not afraid to take on the unlikely of client, and actually go to trial.

In this standalone prequel to his #1 bestseller ROGUE LAWYER, John Grisham tells the story of how Sebastian Rudd met someone he could trust.

Rudd only has one employee: his driver, who's also his bodyguard, law clerk, confidant, and golf caddy. How they met:

A father. Trying to keep his kid off the street. A black Thomas Ray Cardell (T-Ray) defendant. A man accused of killing a cop. A man with show more convictions, no priors, no arrests. A man fighting for his life.

Crack, moving drugs, a flea market, a narcotics cop working single. A missing cop. Buck Lester, a cop—two men down. However, everything is not as it seems. There is a witness to the shooting. A jury trial. A witness in rehab, an addict.

Someone loves the law, and working diligently on the case, to help Sebastian. The new partner. Entertaining, A short audio, narrated by Mark Deakins (same as Rogue Lawyer). Love short stories!

Looking forward to Grisham's Thriller #24, coming Oct 26, 2016!

As others have stated, this is a novella and prequel to Rogue Lawyer. While not my favorite Grisham book, it has made me wanting to read Rogue Lawyer.
Ron is accused of murdering a policeman. He did kill him but was self-defense. A police story is made up to convict him. That is the basis of this story.
Short story leading up to Rogue Lawyer which I actually read first. Interesting enough but took me a little while to get into it.
