This book is about the politics of instituting economic stabilization measures in Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Syria, Tunisia, and Turkey. Despite the considerable differences among the cases studied, the analyses in the book reveal surprising similarities in the difficulties experienced and the delay and reluctance with which the governments in question undertook reforms. The process by which these countries implemented their programs reveals a great deal about their inner working, the strength of the respective state apparatuses, the fragility and resilience of regimes, and about their future direction in a rapidly changing international order.
