If you're looking for a fun, but slightly stuffy, middle grade read- Look No Further! Addison Cooke and the Treasure of the Incas is the one to read. Filled with an unbelievable adventure and a child with the mannerisms of Sherlock Holmes, it's silly yet sure to be a pleasure of a read.
This was one of the books I read with my son, Joshua, for homeschool. Normally we trade off on chapters together, but with potty training Magnus (our Christmas chuhuahua) and reading two scheduled books, I had to use an audiobook instead.
In Addison Cooke and the Treasure of the Incas, by Jonathan W. Stokes and narrated by Ralph Lister), Addison and his sister Molly have to rescue their kidnapped uncle and aunt. A sinister villain, seeking three Incan show more keys to a hidden treasure, will do anything to become rich- even take lives! Everyone is expendable. It's up to Addison's amazing knowledge, his sister and The 86er's (their friends), to go on an adventure of a true lifetime to save the day!
This book was funny, adventurous and very unrealistic. Sure, there are many children with mannerisms like Addison, but this kid was something else! He was so unreal, it almost ruined the story- but it's also what made it so fun and humorous. Addison was a know-it-all, so the fact that a bunch of kids managed to get from New York to Mauchupichu without an adult is freaking ridiculous! But it still made for a fab read.
My son and I laughed at everything about this tale- and all the 'Sticky Wickets' which is a phrase we now use! It's a fresh read and very different from the majority of my reads, but well worth the journey. Check out AddisonCooke and the Treasure of the Incas while move on the next read!
Cheers!

Addison Cooke and his sister Molly live with their aunt and uncle who are archeologists searching for a lost treasure of the Incas. When their aunt and uncle are kidnapped, Addison enlists the help of his two friends, Raj and Eddie to help them get to Columbia to track down the treasure and rescue his aunt and uncle. They encounter many problems along the way including a street thief named Guadalupe who eventually becomes the guide that leads them into danger and adventure as they search for the rest of their family.
Addison Cooke and the Treasure of the Incas is an Indiana Jones type of caper with codes, secret messages, booby traps, and car chases. Addison, his sister, and each of their friends have skills that aid them on their show more journey. The characters are well developed, especially Addison and Molly who obviously miss their parents and desperately wish to hang on to the family that they have left. We don't get much about the villain, Professor Ragar, but that doesn't detract much from this action filled book. Overall, Addison Cooke and the Treasure of the Incas is an exciting escapade filled with thrills and peril. show less

I should've known that I wouldn't care for it, as it was written by a screenwriter. The media are very different. I would consider watching the movie of this. But the book just tastes wrong to me. Engaging, sure. But things like 'saber-tooth tiger' and the complete implausibility of the beginning of the adventure and the extreme characterizations, well, no.
Again, I do like aspects of it. This would be a great line in a movie: "I'm only skipping class to further my education."
