Ruth Law Thrills a Nation

Ruth Law was a very brave, female aviator who was the first woman to break all United States nonstop flight records. She attempted to fly from Chicago to New York City but with no lights on her airplane she had to stop just shy of it. However, the distance she did travel earned her the prestegious recognition of the longer flight, for a year.

Don Brown did a wonderful job with this first picture book of his. It was simply put but very motivational. I think my students would appreciate this when we begin our non-fiction/biography study. A great read for little girls (and boys alike)!

Ruth Law. Gosh, aviators make good heroes for kids! I mean, they're up in the sky, daring, soaring free as a bird in that carefree day before shoe bombers and seat belts. Wow.

Well, not SO carefree, Ruth had to basically build her airplane out of hope and prayers after she was not allowed to purchase a new one. Too many people had died already, hadn't they?

This book is about her attempt to fly from Chicago to NYC in one day. She didn't succeed, but the news kept tabs on her all day and she, you know, "thrilled a nation". Plus, she DID make a record for non-stop flying (one that was broken by another woman). Love the picture of the old New York skyline at the end.

In November of 1916 Ruth Law, a spunky Victorian woman set out on a cold and blustery morning to become the first aviator to fly cross country and set a record of 590 mile flight from Chicago to New York. Her record held for one year, and she showed great tenacity and stubborn determination dispute the social expectations for women in the time.

This was Don Brown's first book for children and I couldn't be more impressed. I loved this book. I admire Ruth Law and am once again astounded by the writing of Don Brown.

Great biography for children to learn about Ruth Law and her determination to be a woman pilot. She broke records being the first woman to fly from Chicago to New York in 1916. This would be beneficial to everyone with the message that anything is possible and to never let anyone else tell you otherwise.
