A story of obsession, revenge and deceit, and a woman caught up in terrifying circumstances. Perfect for fans of Paula Hawkins, C. L. Taylor and Helen Fields. Laura Maxwell appears to have it all - perfect career, perfect husband, perfect life. But how well do you really know the people around you? All it takes is one tiny crack to shatter the whole façade. A series of accidents causes Laura to believe that someone is deliberately targeting her, trying to harm her. First read by this author and it was good. Took place in England and Laura is a barrister whose husband is someone of a sleeve but turns out her client is in love with the husband and trying to kill Laura. A lot of twists, but good story and creepy. ( )

Laura is a successful divorce lawyer, with a handsome husband. On the surface she has the perfect life, but then wierd things start happening. I had my suspicions right from the start - it's a pity Laura didn't! This was a great book with characters to sympathise with, be irritated by. A thrilling, chilling tale - I loved it! ( )

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher through NetGalley.

Laura, a family law solicitor in Brighton, is attacked on her way home by the driver of another car, and goes on to receive death threats. She assumes these are from the ex-hisband of one of her clients. She is also involved in a child abduction case where, due to negligence on the part of another lawyer at her firm, a the son of a client is taken to Tunisia by her father. Other story strands concern Harry, the husband of Laura's client Anna, who is accused of threatening Anna and downloading child pornography.

At one point the various strands got a bit overwhelming, but they do gradually blend together and make sense. (On a side note, the child abduction negligence thing would be covered surely by the professional indemnity insurance all UK lawyers are required to carry - not sure what expensive costs the firm might be fearing. The misconduct allegation is of course another thing).

I found this story to be well-plotted, although at about 60% of the way through I figured out what was going on and then on the next page it was all explained anyway. I felt the suspense should have been maintained a bit longer. There was too much time spent on the mopping up of loose ends after we knew who the perpetrator was. Also, I didn't really warm to any of the characters (although Jeff the vet was quite nice!). ( )
