On her very first day of school, Sophie is reluctant to make friends with the other children, preferring to play with two squash she grew in her garden--but when a particularly persistent boy named Steven gives her a packet of seeds as an apology for accidentally ripping her picture, she realizes that it just takes time to grow a friend.Tags

Sophie brings her two squash, Bonnie and Baxter, to her first day of school, and decides that they are all the friends she needs. Her classmate Steven Green, however, really wants to be friends. Sophie rejects his overtures, but eventually her parents help her see that he is trying to be her friend, and his creative apology after accidentally tearing her picture in school wins her over. Together, Steven and Sophie plan with their teacher to give everyone a cup, some dirt, and a seed to grow their own plants.

A good thing: Sophie is a real little girl, lively, opinionated, vulnerable, fussy....
A not so good thing: Sophie is a real little girl, often unlikable...
There's a happy ending here, but imo it took far too long to get there. First book much better. Will give third a try if one comes.

Sophie's Squash Go To School by Pat Zietlow Miller is a very creative story. I really enjoyed this book and I think it would be a great one to read aloud or together with younger children. This book shows children the importance of letting others in, and being kind to one another. It also shows children that sometimes it takes a little while to make new friends, especially if it is scary for you and that is okay.
Not quite as awesome as the original Sophie's Squash. This book continues the friendships that Sophie has with her squash and narrates a story of transitioning to additional human friends. Sophie is quite the brat with a friend who consistently keeps on coming back, wanting to make friends. Could read in a program with pre-k or younger school age kids.
Sophie decides one day to bring her squash to school with her. She is very reluctant to interact with others but she ends up making a friend.
