Purely an "issue" book, but well-done despite that. Chip is 15 and has a reasonably happy life with his single mother. His mom's an artist, and Chip feels quite responsible for the day-to-day mundane responsibilities of life- and he's good at them. Then his mom gets pregnant and all his order comes crashing down around his ears.
Rylant's dazed, poetical style works very well here, and she does a great job of shifting viewpoints just when you think you have it all figured out. I liked it more than I expected to.
