A mistaken identity gives 11-year-old Felix Piloto the opportunity to learn more about the father he never knew. All Felix’s mother ever told him was that his father, a Cuban superstar baseball player, risked his life to get Felix and his mother to America. Now, a visiting baseball team believes Felix is their batboy, and he’s using the confusion to hang out with real players and see what he can discover about his father. Appropriate for grades 4-6.
The book was one of my favorites. It's the story of Felix, who has a passion for baseball. His father, who is still in Cuba, was considered one of the best Cuban baseball players. Felix's mother does not share the same passion for baseball as Felix does. Therefore, he sneaks off and becomes a bat boy for the Miracles baseball team. He gains friendship, learns about his father, and builds a better relationship with his mother at the end.
I really like this multicultural book. It is about a Cuban boy who reallly likes baseball and wants to play it like his father. It is for younger children.
This book tells the story of a young boy, Felix, who turns into a bat boy for a baseball team after running away from his babysitter during a game at the stadium. Felix and his mother escaped from Cuba when he was an infant, and thus Felix has never met his father. He knows he is a famous Cuban baseball player though which is why he has fostered such a strong passion for the sport. Felix reunites with his mother who explains all the hardships their family has been through and how they need to stick together. This story can be used in the classroom to talk about immigration issues in the United States today so that students can see multiple sides to the situation. It also can be incoporated to talk about how different families have show more unique dynamics and not everyone has the same situation as one another so we all must respect and help everyone as much as possible. show less
