This book broke the usual pattern of previous VCA books by being about a cousin of the main protagonist rather than one of their children. But then, the ending of Unfinished Symphony pretty much wrapped up everything to give Cary and Melody a decent ending. My beef with this series is how helpless and fragile May is made simply because of her deafness, this is ridiculous. Other than that, the Logan family series had been decent, and this book gives us insight into the Logan family secrets.

After all, what had happened to Laura Logan when she ended up in the institution that Olivia had placed her in? This book offers an surprising peek at Uncle Jacob and the love he was capable of. It's pretty clear why Laura's family love her so much, so show more it offers an explanation for the way the family was in the first book of this series. However, Grandmother Olivia certainly hasn't changed much as she shows the same iron will before and after Laura's death. I do wish this book had some more details (what happened between Chester and Haille, for one, and so on and so forth) but this book is still a fairly enjoyable read. show less
Entertaining but I did a lot of skimming as I found it a bit wordy.
A Synopsis?
"Life is pretty much perfect for Laura Logan. She has loving parents, an adorable little sister, her boyfriend Robert, and her protective twin brother, Cary. Only, Cary is jealous of Robert. He believes that Robert is just out to use girls and break their hearts. Also, Cary refuses to let Laura grow up.

But when grandmother Olivia finds out that Laura is dating Robert, she demands that Laura end the relationship. Grandma Olivia says that Robert and his family are beneath them, and doesn't meet up with her social standards. Of course, Laura doesn't do that, and continues to see Robert. But, when Cary "accidently" tells Grandma Olivia that Laura spent an evening show more with Robert alone, Olivia pounces on Laura and threatens to tell her parents. Laura is devasted because she doesn't want to lose her parents' trust. She and Robert cool things down a bit, but Laura becomes very depressed. Cary, who is feeling very guilty about betraying his sister, decides that they should all have a top secret picnic on the beach. Here is where the action begins.

I wonder why V.C. Andrews makes the grandmothers out to be bad?

This book broke my heart. I know V.C. Andrews is far from fairy tale, but I honestly was hoping for a happy ending right up to the end.
This book most definitely deserves five stars. This has to be in the top three best books I've read yet. The sensation I got while reading Music in the Night, I couldn't explain if I tried.
This was my favorite out of the entire series!

Born on June 6, 1924 in Portsmouth, Va., Virginia Cleo ("V. C.") Andrews was one of three children of William Henry and Lillian Lilnora. Andrews worked as a commercial fashion and portrait artist for a time. However, after her father's death in the late 1960s and the family's subsequent move to Manchester, Mo, she began what she described as show more "closet" writing. It was her publisher's decision to use the initials V. C. rather than her full name. This was done for the purpose of neutralizing her gender so as to sell to adult male audiences; the common belief was that men did not like to read books by women writers. Andrews eventually became a full-time writer. Her first novel was a science fiction fantasy entitled The Gods of the Green Mountains, published in 1972. In 1980, she published the bestseller Flowers in the Attic, followed by Petals on the Wind, If There Be Thorns, Seeds of Yesterday, and Garden of Shadows; all of which comprise the Dollanganger Series. Andrews died of breast cancer on December 19, 1986, in Virginia Beach, Virginia. After her death, her family hired a ghost writer, Andrew Neiderman, to finish the manuscripts she had started. He would complete the next two novels, Garden of Shadows and Fallen Hearts, and they were published soon after. These two novels are considered the last to bear the "V. C. Andrews" name and to be almost completely written by Andrews herself. She left a legacy of books that have been sold worldwide and translated into 13 foreign languages. (Bowker Author Biography) V.C. Andrews' novels have sold more than eighty-five million copies and have been translated into sixteen foreign languages. All 38 of V.C. Andrews' novels have hit the New York Times bestseller list.
