Firefighter Lina Standish is contemplating breaking her personal rule about dating a co-worker when an unexpected legacy from her recently deceased sister throws her life into turmoil. Lina is not prepared to become a mother to her niece, newly delivered by surrogate. Lina's ineptitude regarding caring for a baby is nicely juxtaposed by the capability of her recent love interest Kevin Daly but her insistence that she can't take the baby seems odd. She's missing her sister but doesn't want anything to do with her sister's child. Lina comes off as whiny and selfish, Kevin seems too good to be true and the baby is adorable. Lina's gradual acceptance of motherhood is telegraphed from the start. Kevin's moment of rebellion from Mr. Perfect show more is forced and unbelievable. The baby remains adorable. Kevin should dump Lina, adopt the baby and live happily ever after. show less
This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.Heartsent, the second book in Kay Springsreen's The Heart Stories series, was a story of loss, love and unexpected blessings. Springsteen develops her main character, Lina, very well making it easy to rally on her side. Lina is a firefighter whose has feelings for her partner Kevin. But with a strong no dating coworkers code she cannot act on these feelings.
Astoria opens with Kevin and his niece arranging a impromptu date with Lina. We soon learn that Kevin Is both a good friend and potential husband as he goes the extra mile when Lina is faced with life changing and most unexpected events. She has suffered great loss and protects her heart.
I found this a very realistic story. It was not predictable and it keep me turning the pages show more with little regard to other things in my life! I recommend this book to those enjoying a refreshing love story. And not only romantic love, but the love between family members.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review. show less

This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.Another book in the Heart series by Kay Springsteen. It is the story of firefighters who are partners and work very well together, but Kevin and Lina have a secret they both want to be more than friends. If they become more than friends, they can not work together. Kevin makes the first move, but Lina doesn't want to jeopardize their partnership. Lina also has a problem with her late sister's lawyer. Together they find a way for both their dreams to come true. I enjoyed this book because it tells what is like to be a female firefighter in a mostly male world. I would recommend any of the heart series who like a real life story.
This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. This was a book that I couldn't put down. It was excellent. The story is about Lina and Kevin who are two firefighters. But the real story doesn't take place at work but with their developing personal relationship and the curves that are thrown at them. I enjoyed the pace of the book and the length. I also very much appreciated that there was little to no foul language and no detailed sexual scenes. I enjoyed getting to know the characters.
This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.Sometimes your life will change direction even if you fight it. Lina is a firewoman that doesn't date her co workers and that has given her a nickname that she doesn't deserve. Kevin will break down her walls but things are about to get so complicated as Lina's is just about to become a mother and she isn't even pregnant.
Her sister & brother in law are about to have a baby and they have made Lina the guardian and she will need to make a decision, will she keep the baby and have to look at him and remember that they are no longer around.
Lina knows that she can't be a mother she doesn't even like children so how can she take on a baby? Kevin realizes that he wants them both and he will do anything to make sure that Lina knows that.
They show more try play happy family but can it really work between them?
A lovely love story that starts out simple and it just gets more complicated but in a good way. A great read. show less
