I can only imagine the utter psychological torture this man went through. The graphic novel does a good job making visual the tedium, repetition, and feelings of hopelessness. He was very brave, beyond what I can even conceptualize. ( ) Hostage is a graphic memoir detailing the kidnapping of Christophe Andre and the events surrounding what happened afterwards. He told his story to author and illustrator, Guy Delisle. Christophe was kidnapped and held hostage while working with NGO Doctors Without Borders. While the storytelling is a bit sparse, I was no less anxious as the story developed and his situation continued month after month. A student recommended this one to me, and I'll be recommending it in the future! This is a graphic novel memoir about Christophe Andre's kidnapping and time in captivity. While serving as an administrator for Doctors Without Borders, he was kidnapped by armed men and held for ransom for three months, spending most of his time chained to a radiator in a small room, lying on a mattress stuffed with straw. Illustrated in a series of gray tones, DeLisle shares Andre's thoughts and worries as to what is happening, who is responsible, and whether he will be ransomed, rescued or killed. A little too real and dark for me. no reviews | add a review

"In the middle of the night in 1997, Doctors Without Borders administrator Christophe André was kidnapped by armed men and taken away to an unknown destination in the Caucasus region. For three months, André was kept handcuffed in solitary confinement, with little to survive on and almost no contact with the outside world. Close to twenty years later, award-winning cartoonist Guy Delisle ... recounts André's harrowing experience in Hostage, a book that attests to the power of one man's determination in the face of a hopeless situation."-- No library descriptions found. |
