Meet Me Under the Ombu Tree

Santa Montefiore has been rather popular lately, so I decided to give his books a try. I really didn't like this one though, so I don't really get why he's so popular.

In the story, set in Argentine, a niece falls in love with her nephew and they start a relationship. Their parents however feel the relationship should be stopped and send her off to Europe. After having lived there for decades, Sofia returns to Argentine for a death in the family - and finds the love between her and her nephew hasn't disappeared.

I get that this is supposed to be romantic, but I just feel that it's all wrong. Here are two kids, closely related, growing up like brother and sister, and they fall in love. That's incest and just isn't ok. I fully agree with show more the parents that it's better to keep the kids apart.
Sofia is a spoiled brat who always gets whatever she wants, so now that, for once in her life, she doesn't get what she wants, she goes off to sulk, refuses all contact with her family and sets out to find her own way. In the end, she finds a great husband, has children and lives a good life in England.
Yet, when she gets back to Argentine, she and her nephew renew their relationship, even though they are both married with kids. I guess this is supposed to show true love, but I really don't feel like cheating and ruining the lives of their partners and children is such a great thing.
I finished the book because it was a pretty quick read, but by the end was rather disgusted with it and the characters, so I won't be reading Montefiore again any time soon.

The only redeeming quality are some of the parts about the Argentinian landscape and life in the country - but these parts are far too little to really do much for the book. show less

Having read all of Santa Montefiore's books I still think this first one is my favourite.

Een boek dat je vanaf de eerste pagina's al meeneemt naar de magische broeierige sfeer op de Argentijnse pampa. Het is een onvervalst zwijmelboek. Wellicht geen hoogstaande literatuur en wie wil lezen over de politieke geschiedenis van Argentinië, zou ik ook een ander boek aanraden. Maar wat een heerlijk boek vond ik dit. De personages stelen je hart en je leeft met allemaal mee. Ik vind het jammer dat het boek uit is.

Sofia Solanas is de dochter van de rijke Argentijnse paardenfokker Paco Solanas, en een Iers plattelandsmeisje, Anna Melody O'Dwyer. Met haar mengeling van Argentijns en Iers bloed is Sofia niet bepaald een dame. Haar wildheid en haar schoonheid maken haar zeer geliefd bij iedereen, behalve bij haar moeder. De levenslustige en vrolijke Sofia botst vaak met de diepgelovige Anna, die in alles de wil van God ziet. Sofia is dol op paardrijden en heel bedreven in de edele polosport - een sport voor mannen. Zij speelt vaak met haar broers en neven. Santi, de zoon van Paco's broer, vindt haar erg amusant. Haar ongetemdheid en haar plotselinge uitbarstingen maken haar heel anders dan andere meisjes. Tussen Sofia en Santi groeit meer dan show more vriendschap, en meer dan een familieband... Maar ze weten beiden dat, hoewel zij wellicht voor elkaar bestemd zijn, zij elkaar nooit zullen krijgen. show less
