Another great installment by Flanagan. The pacing is spot-on, always moving forward with varying momentum. The characters are enjoyable and witty. It was a little emotional for me, getting the backstory of some of the relationships in the original Ranger's Apprentice series; I love the characters, and love seeing them at every stage of their lives.

This was great as a prequel; it gave me so much more than I would have even asked for. ( )

I haven't had much time to read this recently with the start of a new school semester and two jobs, but I am very happy to have read this book. I enjoy reading about Halt and reading the early years gives me a taste of what occurred before the original series. I really liked this one, but as the books continue, I have noticed a clear formulaic pattern that has been established. Maybe it's because I'm older or have read all of the books so close together, but it just my observation of the writing. This is why I have bumped it down a star. Overall though I did enjoy this book and will continue reading on. ( )

Rangers Halt and Crowley are once again called upon to defend the realm for Duncan. Halt is sent off to spy on Morgarath and his band of Wargals, gaining valuable intelligence while Crowley accompanies the Queen to a spa during her difficult pregnancy. The serial introduction of important characters in the latter series was fun, as well as learning more backstories, but there is too much meandering and repetition in the novel, which could have been omitted. The ending installment of John Flanagan's prequel series, depicting the beginning of the legend of Halt and the details of the events frequently referenced in the early books of the Ranger's Apprentice series. It's simultaneously amusing to see an inexperienced and unknown Halt at work unknowingly building his legend, and exciting to see the events steadily unfold. ( )
