Defending the Faith: J. Gresham Machen and the Crisis of Conservative Protestantism in Modern America

I love D.G Hart and look forward reading his books. However, there is always something somber about them. Even as he talks about Machen's sense of humor and the quirks that he had while teaching his classes it just comes across as somber.

As far as Machen goes he makes for an interesting study. He was a very tender hearted man and certainly a conservative, but was against prohibition. He through himself into his seminary studies but it was a long time before he could even decide to go to seminary. He took his classes serioulsy but he would miss thme for a football game. Today I don't believe he is that well know outside the Presbyterian church but was certainly well known outside the church then and was asked to testify at the scopes show more monkey trial but declined. his works today are certainly well worth reading. show less
