The Bone Field

This is a clear 3.5 star book for me. It is highly entertaining and the lead character is well drawn and interesting. The ending of this book is, to my mind, rather unsatisfactory, simply because this is the first in a series, and the ending is only very partial, but the final hook line is very intriguing and makes me want to read book 2.

I remember reading a different Simon Kernick several years ago and noted I would read more of his writing. For whatever reason I got distracted with other books (happens a lot) and never did. Until now.

I have mixed feelings about this book. It's well written, has interesting characters, but leaves you completely hanging at the end. It's clearly the first in a series that intends to drag you to the store (Kindle or otherwise) to buy the following volumes. I don't like that. If you enjoy driving up to the edge of a precipice wondering whether to hit the gas or brake, be my guest.

Some other reviewers have remarked that the first half is better than the second. I concur. It should probably be called the Killing Field rather than Bone show more Field and it becomes the antithesis of subtlety. Whatever happened to the banality of evil, why must the bad guys be the embodiment of Satan. It's the ordinariness of evil that's really scary. This just becomes a bit unbelievable. show less

This is an ok fast paced thrller.
Detective Inspector Ray Mason is investigating the death of a Girl whose body was recently discovered she went missing in 1990. Another body is found next to hers.

This leads Mason to some proper dodgy characters he gets suspended from the case as someone Criminal died while he was being arrested. Ray teams up with a Private Detective called Tina Boyd she has assisted finding a potential witness in France.
Ray and Tina working privately keep digging they discover a case of young Women being exploited and killed in the Welsh Countryside.

OK book got a bit silly in the end, not sure if I will bother with the next installment.
