This story is interesting because the giant caused the destruction and consequential led to his loneliness. But instead of wallowing in it, he decides to 'undo' what he did and with patience (you don't see the length of time in the book but its mentioned in years) the forest once again houses the animals.
A giant goes around the forrest doing giant things, like plucking trees and smashing things. Doing so scares all the animals away until he is lonely. He finds a little yellow bird one day that sings to him, he captures the bird and has him sing to him all the time, and soon the bird is so sad that he won't sing anymore. The giant learns that to have the forrest be whole again he must behave and treat the forrest with respect, so he plants more trees and waits. Soon the forrest is whole again and the little bird and giant are happy in their new home and sing all day long.
