When Dinosaur Planet came out, I never really expected a sequel, though the plot was left open for it. I enjoyed this one just as much. Don't expect anything complicated, epic or very scientific, this is typical McCaffrey 'light' scifi, but still a good read. Science fiction doesn't have to be written by physicists to be interesting.

Another one from my childhood stash, the second in the Dinosaur Planet duology but it stood alone story wise. It's an early book by McCaffrey and it's unfortunately clunky. The heavyworlders had mutinied and the "normal" humans who survived went into cold sleep to survive. 43 years have passed, no sign of the space ship that brought them there, but the Thek and the avian species that colonised another world in this solar system finally checked in on them. The male expedition leader gets all paranoid and revenge focussed, while the female one starts to develop some empathy for the heavyworlder descendents (seeminly mostly because one is hot). *sigh* They finally got to the revelation of how dinosaurs from the Earth's Mesozoic ended up on show more this planet and it's just kind of meh. The novel advances the larger Planet Pirates series a bit though. show less

This review is mostly the same as for the first book since the same issues apply.

This book was completely unnecessary. The events were already covered, I suspect sometimes word for word, in the Planet Pirates series. There was almost no action in this book, no trajectory, no spice or flavor, no character growth whatsoever. Boring, flat, clinical, disappointing.

In the sequel to Dinosaur Planet, Varian and Kai and the surviving members of their team awake to discover they've been in cold sleep for 43 years and the mutineers that stranded them have since produced 2 new generations. Initially I enjoyed Survivors better than the first book but at times this one got a little slow too and I found the ending a bit drawn out.
I had picked up both Dinosaur and Dinosaur Planet Survivors. I started Dinosaur but put it down after 50 pages. I could not finish it. I started the second novel and found the language less challenging and completed the story sequel.

While I completed the book I was not really excited during the read. I kept waiting for tension or delicious twists in the story but they did not come. The book simply detailed some aspects of life on the planet with the ultimate end of a rescue and the consequences. Satisfying read? Not really, it was like a warm drink of water to me.
Much more satisfying than the first in the series, this novel sets up the even better Sassinak and The Planet Pirates duo. Enjoyable.
