A fun and fascinating read about species that occupy the most extreme conditions on Earth. The author uses a fun format of structuring the book to explore species that are "tougher than humans" as the book explores species that live in extreme, cold, hot, volcanic, and bottom of the sea. The structure and illustrations provide a child atmosphere with the sarcasm and wit.

If I could rate this book with six stars I would have to. This book is one of the most unique works of literature I have encountered. I loved how the illustrations were completed in different styles as some were in comic strip format or horizontal. The text was written in a format that was intended to be comical. The best aspect of this book is that all the information show more is relevant and true. The book even provides readers with an index and glossary. show less
I want this book, and I am seriously considering buying it. It is just so cute and quirky! It's all about extreme environments and the creatures that live in them. Though the book is consisted of facts, the author works a little joke or two into every page. This technique is sure to keep kids not only laughing, but interested. The illustrations also bring the book to life because the cute, almost messy, little cartoons are entertaining and relatable to kids. Great to use when discussing different climates and environments with students because the book has a section for just about all of the major ones. I sure hope this book will be a class favorite because it's definitely one of mine!
Animals live all over the world from the coldest ice floes to the hottest deserts (and even in volcanoes!). Some animals can withstand enormous pressure under the ocean. Some animals can change their temperatures. Some animals can live over 100 years. Learn about all kinds of animals that live life to the extreme in this cartoon-illustrated book.

This book provides a collection of facts, certainly interesting and appealing, but not going in depth on any one animal. The cartoon illustrations are amusing, but don't add a lot to the text. The diagrams and cartoon reenactments pretty much restate exactly what the text says. I think a more effective layout would have mixed the text and the cartoons (a la When Bugs Were Big... and others by show more Hannah Bonner). Still, it's an interesting and amusing book that combines animals with Guinness record-like facts... a combination sure to appeal to kids. show less
I couldn't put this one down. Fascinating biology with a good bit of "gross" factor. Illustrations are superb -- funny! -- and extend the text.
“All over the planet there are animals (and plants) that relish the sort of [extreme] conditions that would kill a human quicker than you could say “coffin.”
So begins Extreme Animals, a lighthearted look at some of the most amazing living things to thrive at the poles, in deserts or volcanoes, or deprived of water, food, or oxygen. Offhand jokes and goofy cartoony illustrations keep even the grimmest facts and figures fun. Be warned – this is one of those books where every page elicits a “did you know…” response!
A "Did you know?" book explaining the toughest animals and facts about them.
This is a book about extreme and tough animals. Each chapter goes through why these animals are so tough. This would be a good book to read in a science class, maybe introducing the subject of biology.
