Description

A small family moves to the Slovenian countryside to restore a large, dilapidated farmhouse. Then the relatives arrive--Cousin Vladimir, a former partisan writing his memoirs, Uncle Vinko, an accountant who would like to raise the largest head of cabbage on record, Aunt Mara, and her illegitimate daughter Elisabeth, bent on losing her virginity. And finally Uncle Schweik, the accidental hero who everyone assumed was dead. I read another, more recent, novel of his last year, My Father’s Dreams. It impressed me a great deal and I recommend that one unreservedly. This, not so much. It put me in mind, a bit, of Jerzy Pilch’s His Current Woman. A not quite believable extended family, including hangers-on, who move to the country for peace and quiet and—surprise, surprise—don’t find it. The happenings are a bit too absurd to swallow after a bit. Though I saw one review that called it “dense with symbolism,” I’m not so sure. On the other hand, maybe I’m just not a good enough reader.
