Description

Sir Peter Ustinov's beautifully crafted autobiography is told with exquisite wit and insight. From his birth in April 1921, it spans his extraordinary career as actor, playwright, film star and director, confirming his early belief that he is 'irrevocably betrothed to laughter'. Ustinov's renowned gift for mimicry is exploited to the full in Dear Me. Eccentric relatives, school masters, sergeant majors and manic Hollywood moguls are all brought unforgettably to life.

First of all I have to say I'm a big fan of Peter Ustinov, always have been. Perhaps knowing that I leaned more towards his frivolous, lighter roles that should have told me how I would feel about this autobiography. Sure, the man was intelligent and cultured. Apparently he also possessed a massive ego, which jumps of the page from the very first sentence. I can only describe this book as pompous, self important twaddle.
I get the feeling that I wouldn't have gotten along with Peter Ustinov. He had, to say the least, a strong personality. That is, however, probably why this is such an interesting and entertaining book.
Depends on your sense of humour.

I listened to an abridged version of this book and couldn't get through the first CD (1 star from me). Fortunately for Mr Ustinov, my husband put it in his car and absolutely loved it (5 stars from him), so the book gets 3 stars on average.

I found his 'hilarious' anecdotes tedious and rambling, my husband, on the other hand, though he was hugely amusing and, knowing many of the famous people who he name-drops, was immediately drawn in.

My husband has a typically male sense of humour, puns and word games, my sense of humour is more demanding, more subtle. Which group do you fall into??
Interesting autobiography from a true renaissance man who mingled with some major players in motion pictures and other disciplines. He is a very funny man and his writing is not a disappointment. Famous as an actor, he was also a diplomat and director.
Wonderful read with some of the statements/images that I must have read 20 odd years ago still with me. Friends are the people you met first... the noise of the car is the sound of his imagination growing... When ever he was on TV he lit the room up. And as far as I am aware no nasty bitchy post death biography so .... Well worth reading to capture a lost world of culture identity
Peter Ustinov tells us about his life and his roots (in Russia, Italy, Germany and Ethiopia).
A fabulous autobiography of one of my favorite actor/writers.
