Triumphantly (and happily) alone, Big Wolf sits under his tree at the top of a hill, observing the world around him. "It had always been that way," the narrator tells us. Then one day, a little (blue) wolf arrives, appearing first as a tiny dot on the horizon. Big Wolf isn't sure what to make of this newcomer, but deciding that he is too small to be a threat, he grudgingly shares his blanket and his morning exercises, eventually taking Little Wolf to heart. But it is only when his new friend disappears, that Big Wolf realizes just how much he has come to value his companionship.

Originally published in France as Grand Loup et Petit Loup, this quietly moving picture-book explores the nature of friendship, and our common need for show more companionship. Without any flashy prose, or dramatic narrative developments, Nadine Brun-Cosme manages to create a genuinely affecting tale in Big Wolf and Little Wolf, and the reader will be heartened (and much relieved) by the conclusion.

Olivier Tallec's gorgeous artwork, with its vividly contrasted palette and its expressive details, provides the perfect visual accompaniment to the tale, capturing the melancholy and joy of both Big and Little Wolf's experience. Of course, they don't look anything like wolves, but that's OK - they look like themselves! Highly, highly recommended!

I liked this book because it showed how two unlikely friends came together. It also showed how a wold learned to love, even though he had always been on his own. At the end, both of the wolves explained how they were better off together than they were apart. This book almost made me cry. The illustrations were nice, with bright, attention-grabbing colors.
Really a lovely little story from France. Could be a great story for a little one expecting a sibling on the way. I thought it also read well through the point of becoming a parent in some ways.
Summary: One day a big wolf is sitting by himself on a hill when a little wolf comes and sits next to him. The wolf is concerned at first because the little wolf might grow and become competition, but he doesn't mind because he likes the company. Little by little, he begins to share his food with little wolf and even give little wolf some of his warmth at night. One day, the little wolf disappears and the big wolf stops eating and becomes upset, hoping for the return of little wolf. Little wolf returns, and both wolves explain how lonely they both were without each other and promise to stay close for the rest of their days.

Personal reflection: I think this book shows young and old minds alike the importance of expressing your feelings show more and letting others know how much you appreciate and care about them. If big wolf had told little wolf how much he liked his company, maybe little wolf would never have left in the first place.

Class use: Text set on appreciation, text set on friendship, read aloud and discuss in small groups if big wolf was lonely before or after meeting little wolf, discuss concepts of friendship

This was such a cute book! This book is about a big wolf who is used to being on his own and when a little wolf arrived, the big wolf was not fond of it at first. When the little wolf went missing for a while, the big wolf missed him. This book is intended for an audience who does not like being lonely.
It is a good example of fairytale because it tells about a complete story between little wolf and big wolf.
Big wolf has a new friend, small wolf. When he goes for a walk, the little wolf disappear and big wolf is so worried. Finally, big wolf find the small wolf. They will not lonely any more.
It is a book make me feel touched and smile. I love the painting and the whole story which is good to teach children friendship.

In this book the main character Big Wolf starts out living by himself and enjoying his life all alone, then one day he met Little Wolf, they became friends over time, then one day Big Wolf went on a walk and when he came back Little Wolf was gone. Big Wolf worried and felt sad and lonely for the first time in his life. He waited for little wolf to return and realized that if Little Wolf did come back Big Wolf never wanted him to leave. One day Little Wolf did return and then he also decided to stay with Big Wolf. This was a good fantasy because the animals took on some human traits and felt some emotions only humans feel, the animals also talked and walked on two feet not show more naturally how they walk. show less
