I love this series. The artwork is gorgeous, it manages to use almost every DC character from the 40s through the 60s without feeling like they were forced into a story where they didn't belong, and its fun. It has its dark moments, but at the end of the day this story is about heroism and doing the right thing. Simply a work of art.
I read this mini-series in the original issue form and really loved it then, but the Absolute Edition completely blew me away. The story is just as great as it was on the first read, but now the pages have blown up to a point where you can really appreciate just how beautiful the art is. Included are also a couple of "deleted scenes" incorporated back into the story, always a fun addition. The extras are great as well, particularly the annotations at the end by the author, giving insight into where the characters and ideas that make up the New Frontier come from. I cannot possibly recommend this book enough.
This is a gorgeous retelling of DC’s Golden to Silver Age. Easy to see why it’s so acclaimed.
DC created the Absolute line, slipcased, oversized hardback editions chock full of extras for their more recent "classics". Of the comics published over the last couple of years, perhaps no work is more worthy of this treatment than Darwyn Cooke's DC: The New Frontier. Not only does the collection reprint the entire fabulous mini-series in full color, it includes annotations from the author, original designs, storyboards, and much more. DC originally collected the series in two separate trade paperback volumes, making this the only one-volume edition.
