Preface -- This book has been used in mimeographed form at Stanford University since the autumn of 1962. After the first draft, the manuscript was used in four classes of first-year German. The second draft represented an extensive revision, based on experiences gained in this first trial run. After another round with a limited number of students, we started teaching all our first-year classes from this book in the autumn of 1964. Since then, several thousand students have used the book in mimeographed form, and the results have been most gratifying.
