After finding a body in the woods, post-war midwife Maudie Rouse takes a turn as an amateur sleuth, questioning the residents of the sleepy village of Llandyfan - between births and cups of tea - in a quest to track down the murderer. The brief disappearance of little Polly, and her subsequent refusal to talk to anyone, is somehow connected with the murder, Maudie is sure - as is the sinister Mr Smith, a travelling salesman. As Maudie edges closer to the truth, will she be next on the murderer's list?
