Mistake number one - reading the 22nd book in a series, when I have never read anything by this author, let alone anything in this series. Mistake number two - failing to realize how poor of a writer Iris Johansen is before I started reading this. Just because someone is a New York Times bestselling authors with millions of book sold does not guarantee they will know how to write. Mistake number three - reading and completing this book. It was utter tripe. I have such contempt for this book that I don't even want to bother with the summary. There was like twenty different things happening and none of them were very connected. Also, I had no idea that this was a supernatural series. The characters were flat, the writing was crap, and the show more plot was.... whack. Also according to Amazon the word "drily" was used 31 times. That is 30 times too many. Avoid this book. show less
Mind Game, an installment in Iris Johansen's Eve Duncan series, is a well written book that simply did not work for me. I find it hard to put my finger on, but I'll try.
I tend to either want pure fantasy/paranormal/whatever or I want just a touch of it within the context of a world that is blind to it. This novel had far more paranormal than I care for in a book that isn't full-fledged fantasy but was far too rooted in the "real" world to be pure fantasy. These distinctions reflect my personal tastes and descriptors only. I think the book may suit those who like stories in what I think of as that middle area.
I found the characters well drawn and I cared about what happened to them, which is one reason I wanted to like it more than I show more did. It is also why I think many readers will like it as long as they don't have the same view of where the story falls on the reality-fantasy spectrum.
I would still recommend this book to people who like more paranormal than reality to their fiction.

I have always enjoyed the Eve Duncan books, but I think enough is enough. This story tied up a lot of loose ends and brought together many of the characters we met along the way, so perhaps this is the last one in the series. Once again the extra-sensory powers of mind melding, controlling a person's blood and dreams sending messages play into the story. We meet Michael, Eve's and Joe's young son, who seems to be super intelligent and have "a way" about him to calm and learn things quickly. He is two but seems to have a vocabulary of one much older. We end up back in Scotland for part of the story as well as in Dubai, where the evil foster mother of Seth Caleb's sisters hatches her plot that involved Jane. It was okay and I did finish show more it, but it was not one that I devoured like others in the series. Based on the reviews, there are many that are die-hard Johansen fans and loved it, so I would recommend it to those readers. If you have not read others in this series, this would not be the one to start with. The publisher provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley. show less
This is the 22nd book in the Iris Johansen's Eve Duncan series. This was a well written book that put some finishing touches on ongoing events in this series. Jane, Eve and Joe's adopted daughter, is looking for Cira's lost treasure while dealing with a mind connection to a person, Lisa, in need. This follows all the books in this series as the characters have a foot in the real world and one in the paranormal world.
This was an fast read that answered many questions and solved some issues that had been building. The characters are wonderful created and you care about what is happening to them and what will happen. This is a great book for this series and I would recommend it to those who like paranormal fantasy. However, you will want show more to read the other books in the story to get the back story of each character. show less

I received a free advance e-copy of this book and have chosen to write an honest and unbiased review. I have no personal affiliation with the author. A great book by one of my all time favorite authors and a true storyteller, Iris Johansen. I couldn’t put it down. Just had to know what was going to happen next. I like the way the author adds a little supernatural into her thrillers. The major characters are Jane McGuire, Seth Caleb, and his sister. Eve Duncan and Joe are also a part of the story. There is hidden treasure, murder, kidnap, torture, some real bad dudes, and characters with special powers. This is a well-written thriller with a great plot and good character development. Another great thriller from Iris Johansen that is show more well worth the read and I look forward to reading more books from this author in the future. show less
For many years, Jane MacGuire has been hunting Cira’s hidden treasures in the mists of the Scottish highlands. But her search for the treasure is interrupted by disturbing dreams of a girl in extreme danger . . . a girl she feels obligated to help. But can she figure where to find the young woman in distress before it’s too late?
Their volatile relationship notwithstanding, Jane finds matters complicated when she is drawn into Seth Caleb’s world where she struggles to save him. And then Eve gives her some surprising news . . . .
This twenty-second Eve Duncan tale puts a strong focus on Jane MacGuire and Seth Caleb, two characters readers have come to know and love through Eve’s earlier episodes. All the expected characters make an show more appearance in the story, keeping the pages turning as the plot builds the tension and ramps up the suspense. Readers will be hard-pressed to set this one aside before the final reveal.
Highly recommended. show less
