I can not believe this beautiful book does not have one written review. I will have to remedy that.
This book is about Moki..a young native american girl with a soul as free as a bird. She wants to live the life she sees her father, brother and other members of her native american tribe living. She is not happy in her role as young female.
I adored this book as a kid and it is every bit as wonderful as an adult.
Read it and see the world through Moki's eyes. She is a kind girl but sassy and free spirited and does not understand why things have to be the way they are.
This book is full of beautiful descriptive prose You will get to know Moki, her tribe and the beautiful open country that is theirs. I have always had an interest in Native show more American culture and this is one of the first book I ever on that culture.
SPOILERS:
There is some sadness and tragedy in this book and I want to stress that because it isn't all sweetness and light. But Moki remains a nostalgic read for me and a wonderfully written beautiful book which I am happy to recommend. show less

Moki is a book I purchased at my sister-in-laws consignment shop. It was so old the pages were brown and crumbling. It was one of several book that were sold in a stack together. Used or not it was still a charming book. Moki is a young Cheyenne girl who wishes she could do the things her brother does. He is a warrior. She wants to have her name called out in camp, a great honor reserved for warriors only. In Cheyenne society women and men have different paths. Women do not do mens work and women do not do what men do. It is considered wrong and has dire consequences. Unknown to Moki she would one day hear her name called out in the show more camp for an act of courage. This book would be best enjoyed by 8 - 10 year olds. show less
