338. With Napoleon in Russia The Memoirs of General de Caulaincourt, Duke of Vicenza (read 10 Feb 1948) I was taking Father Green's class "French Revolution and Napoleon" and this was a book he suggested be read. It is an account of the invasion of Russia in 1812. Not a happy time for the author.

First words
The events in Europe leading up to 1812 had so great an influence on those which followed later, by placing the balance of Europe's destinies into the hands of Russia, that I have felt it would be valuable to preserve the not... (show all)es which I made regarding various circumstances of those days.
Last words
(Click to show. Warning: May contain spoilers.)I venture to assert that during this journey the Emperor was kind enough to hear me without taking offence; and I say once again that I was able to convince myself, from the nature and frankness of his conversation; that one could lay many claims to his confidence who could lay none to his favour.
