Description
Book 1 of 3: The year is 3030. For the past three hundred years, since the Star League collapse and the rise of the Five Successor States, these mortal enemies have fought over space, land and politics. But a new threat looms just outside the Inner Sphere. The descendants of an old Star League general, the Clans-bred to be the best military force humanity has ever seen-have come to take what they believe is rightfully.Tags

I know the story, but it's still fun. Stackpole shows us how the Inner sphere and the Clans are basically a more exciting take on Game of Thrones than what GRRM would later publish in 1996!
Big machine goes pew pew.
Mechs have never really been my thing, more of a spaceship guy myself, but this was pretty good. Basically a bunch of teenage mech pilot prodigies that happen to be the heirs to every important person in the galaxy have to battle a new threat with advanced mech tech. A new threat has been found in the outer galaxy that no one knows who/what it is, what it’s goal is, or how to defeat it’s super mechs.
The only battletech knowledge I had prior to reading this was what my buddy who literally lives in his mother’s basement told me, which was a loose timeline summary. Going into this somewhat blind I found it easy to follow and most deep lore is glossed over.
Overall you’ll like it if you like big robots show more fighting. The main knock against it is that Stackpole spends more time explaining the role of sex in the enemy society than he does on any other aspect of them. show less

Once again, Stackpole shows he can write Battletech like no other. This is a fantastic start to the trilogy! I loved reading about the "next generation" of all the great houses and how they were living up to their heritage. I had to pick my jaw up off of the floor after reading the epilogue!
