Sadoveanu, who wrote more than 120 books, is generally considered to be Rumania's greatest prose writer. His fiction is being published for the first time in this country under a U.S.-Rumanian cultural exchange program. Tales of War (1905) was inspired by the people's heroism in the 1877 War of Independence against Turkey. In Evening Tales he also show more writes of the common folk, from innkeepers to gypsies. In The Mud-Hut Dwellers (1912), "vivid descriptions of peasant life in nineteenth-century Rumania charm and captivate the reader... .
